2013’s R/Hr multi-chapter fic:

He lay on his back, stretched along rotten wood, dust and blood… some of his own, some soaked into the wood from another time. If he closed his eyes, he could alleviate some of the burn for a while, sand having cut and dried out every last one of his tears.

A hazy morning approached. He’d grown used to the way the atmosphere would change, something like a thick fog setting in across the barren earth. Deep peach dawn broke through gray, and he let himself breathe in the slowly moving air, trying to churn, but stuck, as if it had given up, like so much else had already.

The ground was broken, beige and brown and cracked open around him. He’d come so far from those days of lying in pillow-soft grass by the lake at Hogwarts on a lazy Sunday. But he needed hope and memories to push on. If he considered the truth, the likelihood of his escape, of a possible return to his old life and to her, he might simply fade away amidst the haze. Barring a miracle, would he ever see her again? Would he ever feel the warm grass beneath his tired muscles, the sun overhead, a splash of crystal water against his face… the taste of treacle tart?

He smiled a bit at that, cracking open his eyes to gaze up into the nothingness of the dusty, sky-like dome above him. He was lying, broken, missing baked desserts.

…And he regretted it, so much now, that he’d never thanked her. That he’d never pulled her down and told her everything would be alright. That none of what had happened was her fault.

Could he do it now? Could he really make up for years of mistakes? He clenched his fists at his sides, feeling sick. Before he’d left her, he might have been able to. But now…

A thousand enemies could not deliver a blow as strong as she could. Just one set of eyes looking through him with brimming disappointment. Just one set of lips cursing his name for ever coming back to her, for holding onto hope that she’d ever want to see him again. Just one set of ears, listening to his words but not believing them.

He had lost everything, by losing her. Like a man falling off the edge of a jagged cliff, he scrambled with nothing but frayed fingernails to hold on…

4. If you had an opportunity to spend a month with Rupert Grint at an exotic beach resort, but you knew you would die a year later if you chose to take that opportunity, would you still do it? If not, is there a celebrity that you WOULD do it for? I’d have too many questions in this hypothetical scenario, making me no good at answering these things! One year? Either way, I wouldn’t. But if you’d said twenty years, I’d want to know whether Rupert was my friend beforehand or was being forced into this, whether he actually enjoyed my company or was ‘potioned’… those sorts of things ha.

5. What’s your favorite candy bar? OH SHIT. I have a definitive answer to this: Thingamajig! Not a day goes by that I don’t think of it…

6. Which of the Marauders would you do, if you had an opportunity to do ONE of them? Um. If I have to choose, I guess I’d go with Sirius?

7. Fred or George? And why? Can’t choose. No way. They go together, always :(

8. Is Charlie Weasley gay? Or just a permanent bachelor type? I’m sure you could convince me either way. I wouldn’t be surprised if JKR said he was. But then, training dragons - doesn’t exactly give him time or security to settle down and have a family. He’s full of too much everlasting adventure :)

9. What’s your favorite book in the Potter series & why? Deathly Hallows. Hands down. Ron’s shining moments, and the tying together / conclusion of a whole series of the best books ever written.

10. What’s your favorite Potter film adaptation & why? Deathly Hallows Part One. I enjoyed it overall, as a film, more than any of the others. The cinematography, landscape, acting, etc. We got a chance to just spend time with Harry, Ron and Hermione on their own, which… is really what the whole series has been all about for me! And, of course, The Silver Doe, even with its missing (really important) lines!

11. WHY the back of Rupert’s head? The world will never know. But the most reasonable explanation is that they didn’t rehearse beforehand, shot what came natural because they wanted it to BE natural, and that was that. But we all know there are other shots out there. Someone is just sitting on a pile of gold blocks and film reels, giggling to themselves, waiting to announce the NEW 400 Disc Box Set of all eight films, 75 hours of bonus material, and 86 commentary tracks in 12 languages… for $5,000…

12. Beer or wine? Neither. Midori sours. White Russians. Buttery nipples. What? …okay, ciders and wine coolers are amazing, that’s true.

13. Lounging on the beach with a mai tai & your favorite book, or camping, hiking, & rafting? Lounging. Unless I’m hiking in Scotland.

14. If you could use the Room of Requirement, what would you use it for? Wow. Um… A planetarium?

15. If you could be any book or movie character, who would you want to be and why? Uh, Hermione Granger. Obvious reasons :D

8. The novel you wish you’d written is: I don’t think I’d like to imagine I’d written any of the things I love the most. I mean, being J.K. Rowling has got to be cool, but come on now. That’s absurd, because I’d have to be her, not just be me who happened to have her brilliant ideas, because I never would have and never will. Okay, now I just feel like a robot whose schema is failing due to over-hypothetical-ness!

So I was perusing the RHR tag on tumblr today for the first time ever (I usually just stick with what pops up on my dash and occasionally check the Romione tag if I’m super bored) and came across a post from a H/Hr shipper linking to an essay on MuggleNet called ‘Ron’s Jealousy’ where an apparently well-known and admitted Ron hater attempted to explain just why Harry Potter’s best friend is so reviled by so many fans of the series. Needless to say, I didn’t care for it.

Because character bashing (or even just misrepresentation of a character) is my biggest quibble with this fandom, I decided to write an all-encompassing piece on Ron, not to try and refute any of the claims made in the original essay in particular (because we all know it’s all but impossible to change someone’s mind about this stuff at this point), but because I wanted to express my love and appreciation for Ron’s unfairly-maligned character once and for all.

I quickly realized I had a lot to say, so instead of trying to jam everything into one post, I’m going to go through each book in the series one by one, tackling Ron’s character development and his relationships with other characters, especially Harry and Hermione. I don’t know how long it’ll take me, but it’s been about a year since I’ve read the series so I’m looking forward to it and hopefully someone out there will enjoy reading my thoughts or even want to add a few of their own. One thing to note, I will occasionally be quoting from the books, but I’m reading them online so I won’t be able to provide page numbers. Now, without further ado, here’s the first one:

Wow. I will have a trillion things to say to this, all of them praise and bows in your direction, but let’s start here…

“And while Ron may not be dead last in his family as he thinks, he certainly isn’t the favorite either.”

I think about Ron’s unique position in his family quite often. Not only does he have a lot of other siblings, and your favoritism comment fits, particularly with a father having a favorite and a mother having another favorite… but he is also the LAST boy in a long line of them. His parents have had five other chances to raise a boy. At this stage, this is old hat to them. They are hoping for a girl, but they get another boy, and maybe they skimp on raising Ron in some unintentional ways because they are so used to it with his older siblings.

Also, at this stage, Ron has a lot of people probably directing him and telling him what to do. He’s got brothers old enough to boss him around or assume a ‘parenting’ type of role when his parents aren’t there to do it, or when they happen to be out of earshot.

I think the Weasleys are great parents and love their family, but at the same time, they are as flawed as any other human and they overlook Ron in a lot of ways that are both unintentional and because they have already dealt with anything he can throw at them before. I imagine they might even use default, already-tried responses and bits of assistance with him, things that worked on his brothers when they were young and needed something. But Ron is his own person. He has his own unique needs, and I think that goes widely unnoticed by his family. It’s like with the corned beef, as you said. His mum has a lot on her mind, a lot to remember, and she doesn’t take the proper time to sort through who likes what or who wants what. I can almost see her being a little annoyed with him not liking something and voicing it, especially as she now has his five older siblings and little Ginny to feed and worry about as well.

Besides that, Ginny came along so close to Ron, and the Weasleys suddenly had a brand new challenge for the first time in a long few years: a girl to take care of. So they focus on that a lot more than on Ron, familiar to a fault with how boys grow but completely new to raising a girl.
